What's underground?
Prairie dog burrows, on average, are about 15 feet deep.
Burrows are highly complex. They have multiple chambers, tunnels and entrances.
Prairie dogs are social animals that live in colonies. A single colony can contain 100's to 1,000's of individuals.
The extensive burrowing systems created by prairie dogs can significantly impact the land.
They undermine the ground and it weakens the soil structure. Additional issues, for instance, are damages done to farming equipment.
Pocket gophers and ground squirrels can cause an equally amount of damage to farm land and vegetation.
