What's underground?

  • Prairie dog burrows, on average, are about 15 feet deep.
  • Burrows are highly complex. They have multiple chambers, tunnels and entrances.
  • Prairie dogs are social animals that live in colonies. A single colony can contain 100's to 1,000's of individuals.
  • The extensive burrowing systems created by prairie dogs can significantly impact the land.
  • They undermine the ground and it weakens the soil structure. Additional issues, for instance, are damages done to farming equipment.
  • Pocket gophers and ground squirrels can cause an equally amount of damage to farm land and vegetation.
